SPRINGBANK

Springbank distillery was built in 1828 by two brothers, Archibald and Hugh Mitchell. The distillery, located on the southern Kintyre peninsula, produces three distinct types of single malt Scotch whisky, Springbank, Longrow and Hazelburn. She is one of the few remaining family owned distilleries and she is one of the last surviving producers of Campbeltown Single Malts.

Most Springbanks were released as expensive 'ultra premium' bottles. For many years the owners of Springbank claimed they could set such steep prices for their whisky because they didn't have enough stocks to satisfy demand.

STRATHISLA

Strathisla distillery is the oldest continuously operating distillery in Scotland. It was founded as the Milltown Distillery by George Taylor in 1789. Chivas Brothers started a renovation of the run-down equipment right after they obtained the malt whisky distillery and changed the official name of the distillery to Strathisla in 1951.

  • no site available

The availability of Strathisla as a single malt is limited, because most of the malt whisky are used in the various Chivas Regal blends - including 'Royal Salute'. Strathisla 1970 from MoS is one of my favourite miniatures.

STRATHMILL

Some of the buildings on the Strathmill distillery complex are actually older than the distillery itself - they were once part of a corn mill. This mill was founded in 1823. In 1962 W. & A. Gilbey merged with United Wine Traders (a group that included Justerini & Brooks) to form International Distillers & Vintners, IDV, predecessors of Diageo).

  • no site available

It is said that Strathmill released their first single malt in 1909. However, most of the output of the distillery has always been destined for blends like J&B and Dunhill.

Until 1928 triple distillation was used at the Talisker distillery. Talisker distillery doesn't have its own maltings facility, so all the malted barley needs to be shipped in from the mainland.
